To provide up-to-date research and practice, knowledge and skills to Postural Stability Instructors

Introduction

Continuing Professional Development days have been developed for qualified Postural Stability Instructors. Some of the days are also open to professionals not qualified as PSIs. Qualified PSIs also have the ability to attend a half day Practical Refresher.

All CPD days run from 9.00am to 4.30pm, unless stated otherwise. The half day Practical Refresher runs from 1.00pm to 4.00pm onwards on ANY Day 3 of a PSI course currently being run.

Candidates will receive a Certificate of Attendance. However please note CPD points are not available on the half day practical refresher day.

CPD1: PSI Update –The Evidence

(Level 4/Postgraduate Level).

This CPD day is for qualified PSIs working in community and NHS settings, and would be of interest to OEP Leaders who also hold a L3 Older Adult or/and L3 GP Referral Qualification. The day will include research updates in falls prevention and best practice delivery of evidence based strength and balance programmes (what we should be doing!). Tutors: Dawn Skelton/Vicky Johnston and Sheena Gawler/Sara Paul/Bex Townley.

Learning outcomes for the day are;

  •   identify the benefits, types and prescriptions of exercise for effective falls 
prevention
  •   identify the benefits of different types of falls prevention interventions, formats for delivery (circuit v. unison approaches)
  •   review key research around sedentary behaviour and strategies to encourage people to move more
  •   revise and update their PSI practice and progression (all components)
  •   evaluate their PSI practice with particular relation to Otago and FaME programmes
  •   analyse and/or identify physical activity of the participants/clients in their sessions compared to UK Physical Activity Guidelines (all older people groups)

This one day CPD course carries 6 REPS points as there is no assessment.

CPD 2: Tai Chi for PSIs

(Multi-Level). For a Range of professionals.

This day will update PSIs on the evidence behind Tai Chi for health improvement and maintenance of balance. Progression of the moves taught on the PSI course plus new Tai Chi moves that can be incorporated into PSI sessions, will be practised in individual and group formats. There will be in-depth discussion about the core philosophy behind Tai Chi. Tutor: Jane Ward.

Although developed for PSIs, this Tai Chi CPD Day is also appropriate for other health and exercise professionals already working with older people, such as;

  • Exercise/Movement and Dance Teachers/Instructors
  • Sports Coaches/Physical Education Teachers working with older people
  • Physiotherapists
  • Physiotherapy students
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physiotherapy Assistants, including Rehabilitation Assistants (supervised by Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists)
  • Chairbased Exercise leaders and Otago Exercise leaders

CPD 3: Physiotherapy Approaches to Falls

(Level 4/Postgraduate Level). For a range of professionals.

(NB. this CPD day is open only to Physiotherapists and Physiotherapy assistants who hold the PSI qualification). This day is led by an eminent Physiotherapist in Falls prevention. It will provide an update on therapy-based approaches to falls prevention in a range of clinical settings, and an update on dizziness and vestibular issues in older people with assessment and treatment options. It will also discuss and demonstrate the therapy led guidelines for tailoring the OTAGO and FaME exercise programmes and the protocols and considerations involved in setting up a Falls Exercise Service. Developed for Physiotherapists specialising in the prevention and management of falls in frailer older people. Also appropriate for;

  • All Physiotherapists of all specialities
  • Physiotherapy students
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapy Assistants, including Rehabilitation Assistants and Technical Instructors (supervised by Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists)

CPD 4: Osteoporosis

(Level 4/Postgraduate Level). For a range of professionals.

This day will update PSIs and physiotherapists on the new evidence on exercise and bone health and falls prevention. It will cover both theory and practice, including the exercises, specialist teaching skills and therapy led guidelines for tailoring the FaME programme for those with diagnosed Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. Developed for health and fitness professionals specialising in the prevention and management of Osteoporosis and Falls & Fractures. Also appropriate for;

  • All Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapy Assistants, including Rehabilitation Assistants (supervised by Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists)
  • Pilates Instructors & all level 2 & 3 Exercise Instructors

CPD 5: Motivation and Adherence

(Multi-Level). For a range of professionals.

This day will update PSIs on the perceptions and barriers that older people have to taking part in physical activity and exercise. It will evaluate the new evidence behind fear of falling and the uptake and adherence to falls prevention interventions. It will explore strategies for presenting information to participants to increase uptake, enjoyment and confidence. Tutor: Bob Laventure.

Developed for PSIs. Also appropriate for other health/health promotion and exercise professionals, such as;

  • Social Care professionals
  • Exercise/Movement and Dance Teachers/Exercise Instructors

This one day CPD course carries 6 REPS points as there is no assessment.

CPD 6: Parkinson’s and Exercise

(Multi-Level). For a range of professionals. This day will update PSIs on the condition, a review of the recent research, a practice discussion (observing video footage of people) on the exercise approaches and tailoring that may be altered for people with different sub-types of Parkinson’s, the use of rhythm and other cues in providing exercise, a theory and policy update to look at physical activity and exercise guidance for people with long-term conditions such as Parkinson’s and a practice update: An example using circuit exercises and progressions. This one-day course has been developed essentially for L4 PSI exercise professionals and physiotherapists specialising in the management of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Content however could be tailored to, and appropriate for L3 qualified instructors and L3 GP referral qualified instructors who have experience of working with people with Parkinson’s. The single day CPD is written and delivered by Dr Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE, FCSP, a Physiotherapist specialising in the management of older adults and people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s. CPD 7: Working with Visually Impaired People

(Multi Level). For a range of professionals.
Sighted Guided Techniques, and Breaking down barriers for visually impaired people
This CPD day can benefit instructors and health professionals at all levels working with visual impaired patients/clients.

The day will be facilitated by Prof Dawn Skelton and will include feedback from a research study (VIOLET) evaluating the adaptations to running a falls programme (PSI/FaME) with visually impaired older people. It will also cover the following content;

  • Break down barriers around blindness, boost confidence when working with blind and partially sighted people
  • Learn the recognised techniques used to approach, offer help and safely guide a blind or partially sighted person
  • Discuss the language around blindness, address some common myths
  • Highlight the most common eye conditions (simulated through the use of special glasses to give attendees the opportunity to experience what it might be like to live with these conditions).

Cost

The cost of all PSI CPD Days is £110 plus VAT.

If you want to ‘host’ a CPD Day for your Qualified PSIs or you want to advertise and host a CPD Day in your area, we will run a CPD Day for up to 20 people at a cost of £1200 plus VAT for CPD2-5 and £1500 plus VAT for CPD1. We will set a date for your course with a guarantee of a minimum of 12 people. Terms and conditions apply, please contact the LLT office.

LLT are pleased to offer Qualified PSIs the chance to come on a PSI course near them for half a day to refresh their practical teaching skills and to re-acquaint themselves with a selection of the exercises. Day 3 on any of the PSI course dates advertised on the Course Dates page (click here) from 1.30pm – 6pmis now available for you to attend. Please note that this is not a CPD Day with REPS points, it is a half day aimed at “rusty” PSIs who have not delivered PSI sessions for some time and need a practical refresher.
