Postural Stability Instructor
Vision:
To provide up to date research and practice, knowledge and skills to Postural Stability Instructors

Introduction

Continuing Professional Development days have been developed for Qualified Postural Stability Instructors. Some of the days are also open to professionals not qualified as PSIs. Qualified PSIs also have the ability to attend a half day Practical Refresher.

All CPD days run from 9.00am to 4.30pm, unless stated otherwise. The half day Practical Refresher runs from 1.00pm to 4.00pm onwards on ANY Day 5 PSI course currently being run.

Candidates will be supplied with relevant resources and will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

CPD1: PSI Update–The Evidence

(Level 4/Postgraduate Level). For Qualified PSIs only.

This day will provide PSIs with an update on new evidence behind both exercise-only and multi-factorial interventions to reduce falls and on the updated UK older adult physical activity guidelines. There will also be a practice update; a chance to check your delivery skills, some new exercises, progressions to circuits, compensatory stepping and ball work; Tutors: Dr Dawn Skelton and Sheena Gawler/Sara Paul .


This one day CPD course carries 4 REPS points as there is no assessment.

CPD 2: Tai Chi for PSIs

(Multi-Level). For a Range of professionals.

This day will update PSIs on the evidence behind Tai Chi for health improvement and maintenance of balance. Progression of the moves taught on the PSI course plus new Tai Chi moves that can be incorporated into PSI sessions, will be practised in individual and group formats. There will be in depth discussion about the core philosophy behind Tai Chi. Tutor: Jane Ward.

Although developed for PSIs, this Tai Chi CPD Day is also appropriate for other health and exercise professionals already working with older people, such as;

  • Exercise/Movement and Dance Teachers/Instructors
  • Sports Coaches/Physical Education Teachers working with older people
  • Physiotherapists
  • Physiotherapy students
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physiotherapy Assistants, including Rehabilitation Assistants (supervised by Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists)
  • Chairbased Exercise leaders and Otago Exercise leaders

This one day CPD course does not carry REPS points.

CPD 3: Physiotherapy Approaches to Falls

(Level 4/Postgraduate Level). For a range of professionals.

(NB. this CPD day is open only to Physiotherapists and Physiotherapy assistants who hold the PSI qualification). This day is led by an eminent Physiotherapist in Falls prevention. It will provide an update on the assessment of falls across Europe and make recommendations for the selection and implementation of assessment tools for a range of clinical settings. It will also discuss and demonstrate the therapy led guidelines for tailoring the OTAGO and FaME exercise programmes and the protocols and considerations involved in setting up a Falls Exercise Service. Developed for Physiotherapists specialising in the prevention and management of falls in frailer older people. Also appropriate for;

  • All Physiotherapists of all specialities
  • Physiotherapy students
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapy Assistants, including Rehabilitation Assistants and Technical Instructors (supervised by Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists)

This one day CPD course does not carry REPS points.

CPD 4: Osteoporosis

(Level 4/Postgraduate Level). For Qualified PSIs only.

This day will update PSI’s on the new evidence on exercise and bone health and falls prevention. It will cover both theory and practice, including the exercises, specialist teaching skills and therapy led guidelines for tailoring the FaME programme for those with diagnosed Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. Developed in partnership with the University of Derby and the NOS. Tutor: Susie Dinan.

Developed for Physiotherapists specialising in the prevention and management of Osteoporosis and Falls & Fractures. Also appropriate for;

  • All Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapy Assistants, including Rehabilitation Assistants (supervised by Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists)
  • Pilates Instructors & all level 2 & 3 Exercise Instructors

This one day CPD course carries 4 REPS points as there is no assessment.

CPD 5: Motivation and Adherence

(Multi Level). For Qualified PSIs only.

This day will update PSI’s on the perceptions and barriers that older people have to taking part in physical activity and exercise. It will evaluate the new evidence behind fear of falling and the uptake and adherence to falls prevention interventions. It will explore strategies for presenting information to participants to increase uptake, enjoyment and confidence. Tutor: Bob Laventure.

Developed for PSIs. Also appropriate for other health/health promotion and exercise professionals, such as;

  • Social Care professionals
  • Exercise/Movement and Dance Teachers/Exercise Instructors


This one day CPD course carries 4 REPS points as there is no assessment.

If there is no dates set for the CPD day you are interested please contact us or submit your interest on the application form. Dates are set purely in response.

Cost

The cost of all PSI CPD Days is £70 plus VAT.

If you want to ‘host’ a CPD Day for your Qualified PSIs or you want to advertise and host a CPD Day in your area, we will run a CPD Day for up to 25 people at a cost of £1200 plus VAT for CPD2-5 and £1500 plus VAT for CPD1. We will set a date for your course with a guarantee of a minimum of 12 people. Terms and conditions apply, please contact the LLT office.

Want to refresh your practical teaching skills?

LLT are pleased to offer Qualified PSIs the chance to come on a PSI course near them for half a day to refresh their practical teaching skills and to re-aquaint themselves with a selection of the exercises. Day 5 on any of the PSI course dates advertised on the Course Dates page (click here) from 1-4pm onwards is now available for you to attend. Please note that this is not a CPD Day with REPS points, it is a half day aimed at “rusty” PSIs who have not delivered PSI sessions for some time and need a practical refresher.

The cost to attend this half day is £35 plus VAT. If you are interested in attending a practical revision session please contact us at the LLT office.
