Web consultation on the development of new Physical Activity Guidelines in the UK is now LIVE

Are you interested in commenting on the content of new Physical Activity Guidelines in the UK which are currently under development? We are pleased to invite you to log on and participate in a national web consultation. This is an opportunity for the scientific community and interested stakeholders and practitioners to comment on the draft recommendations on what new UK Guidelines on Physical Activity should include.

The consultation is open until 5pm on 15th Jan 2010. All comments will be collated by BHFNC and will feed into the final Technical Report and final recommendations provided to UK governments.We look forward to your input in this process.

Want to update your practical skills? LLT offer new half day practical revision for PSI Instructors

We are pleased to offer Qualified PSI Instructors the chance to come on a PSI course near them for half a day to update their practical skills.  Day 5 on any of the PSI course dates advertised on the Course Dates page (click here) from 1-4pm onwards is now available for you to attend at a cost of £35 including VAT.  If you are interested in attending a practical revision session please contact us at the LLT office.

LLT Directors meet Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing and Deputy First Minister of Scotland August 2009

On Aug 27th, Dawn Skelton and Bob Laventure, met with the Deputy First Minister of Scotland to discuss Scottish Government contribution and collaboration with the World Congress on Active Ageing in August 2012.  The Scottish Government has a committment to support Active Ageing leading up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 as part of their 'Common Health Legacy'.  It was a very positive meeting. :)  Further information on the World Congress on Active Ageing can be found on http://www.wcaa2012.com/ and http://www.bhfactive.org.uk/downloads/WCAA_final.pdf

North West Community Falls Prevention Steering Group

Active Living, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, have recently set up a “North West Community Falls Prevention Steering Group” for any area’s or individuals within the North West and surrounding areas, who deliver Falls Prevention/Postural Stability sessions in the community.

The meetings are aimed to discuss different topics and issues that may occur in Community Falls Prevention projects as well as providing a network for individuals/area’s to benchmark and work along side. The meetings are looking to include: Speakers, workshops, training days as well as a great opportunity to network with other areas to see how you can develop your own projects.

RCP and Healthcare Commission Audit of Services for Fallers 2006. An audit of health services in England for people who fall shows that a quarter of NHS acute Trusts are not part of a coordinated and integrated falls service, despite this being a key milestone of the National
Service Framework for Older People by April 2005. The audit, performed by the Royal College of Physicians for Professor Ian Philp, National Director for Older People and the Healthcare Commission, paints a mixed picture of services for falls and bone health.

New research from Help the Aged and the University's of Southampton & Manchester, examines the attitudes and feelings of older people towards falls prevention services and resources. It explores different approaches and ways of communicating falls prevention messages to older people, as well as ways of encouraging older people to take up falls prevention advice. A recent report by the Department of Work and Pensions, 2009, highlights Nottingham Activity Friends (Peer-Mentors) as a model of good practice.  Click here to see the report (see pages 47/48).

Key Lessons

Following three years of joint working, last summer the BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health at Loughborough University and the ActiveAge Unit, Age Concern England undertook an assessment of the impact of the Someone Like Me programme.  They identified top 10 key areas of learning from programmes currently involved in the “Someone Like Me” Programme. They are seen as essential to the successful planning of any local programme.
