This course was developed 1999 with funding from the Department of Health and was piloted in South West London (Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth) Health Authority in 2000 with administration by East Midlands and Pennine Training at Leicester College.
There is good evidence that tailored, specific exercise can improve postural stability and reduce other risk factors for falls and injurious injuries including osteoporotic fracture. It is essential, therefore, that Primary Health Care Teams and Social Services, ideally placed to detect individuals with a risk or history of falling, recognise the benefits of, and promote, referral into an appropriate exercise programme.
In response to these needs, this specialist training (54 contact hour, 100 non-contact hour) module has been designed to equip a variety of professionals with the understanding and practical skills to deliver a range of exercise programmes to vulnerable individuals. The course has been specifically designed to improve postural stability and reduce the risk of falls. It has been developed by a team with extensive expertise in the fields of research, exercise, medicine and general practice, falls and injury prevention, rehabilitation, education, social services and public health.
It is a recognised, validated course; the first of its kind worldwide to lead to a specialist qualification in the provision of therapeutic exercise for reducing the risk of falls and fractures. The Postural Stability module is compatible with:
Register of Exercise Professionals Logo The National Framework of Occupational Standards (NOS) and Vocational Qualifications (NVQS) established for exercise and fitness professionals working in the fields of Sport, Recreation and Leisure and with;
The criteria for inclusion on the Exercise Register of qualified exercise and fitness professionals (REPS).
The Postural Stability Instructor course is a qualification that can be used as CPD for fitness professionals (click here to see current L3 Frailer Older Adults Falls Prevention information).  SkillsActive and REPs recognise the quality of the course and it is now recognised as a Level 4 Endorsed training course.
The Postural Stability Instructor course has ‘Post-Qualifying' Endorsed Training Status with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. Further information on the training that is endorsed by the CSP can be found here. The information that the CSP give out on our course and endorsement can be found here.

Candidates on the course are normally Physiotherapists and Exercise for the Older Person Advanced Instructors, though Occupational Health Therapists, Specialist Elderly Nurses and Rehabilitation and Therapy Assistants working with supervision in their setting also attend.

Above all, this module is practical, evidence-based and inter-disciplinary in nature, and aims to prepare candidates to promote independence and reduce falls among older people through the delivery of safe, effective, specialised exercise programmes.
